How Acne Works
Acne develops inside hair follicles when excess oils and dead skin combine to form a plug. This plug, called a comedo, traps oil beneath the skin’s surface. As bacteria multiply and white blood cells flood into the follicle to fight infection, the comedo swells and becomes inflamed, forming a pimple.

There are two main types of acne: non-inflammatory and inflammatory.

A whitehead is formed when the trapped sebum and bacteria stay below the skin surface.

A blackhead occurs when the trapped sebum and bacteria are partially exposed to the skin’s surface and turn black due to oxidation of melanin, the skin’s pigment.

A blackhead or whitehead can release its contents to the surface and heal, or the follicle wall can rupture and inflammatory acne can ensue.

A papule occurs when there is a break in the follicular wall. White blood cells rush in and the pore becomes inflamed.

A pustule forms several days later when chemical irritation due to sebum components causes the comedo to fill with pus.

An inflamed lesion can sometimes collapse or explode, severely inflaming the surrounding skin, and sometimes engulfing neighboring follicles. These lesions are called nodules or cysts and may require prescription medication under a doctor’s care.

Acne is not your fault. Despite common myths and misconceptions, acne is not caused by poor hygiene or diet but by biological factors such as genetics and hormone fluctuations.

You are not alone. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, more than 80% of teens, 25% of adult men and 50% of adult women have acne.

Today, virtually every case of acne can be treated. We have a greater understanding of acne than ever before, resulting in truly effective treatments. Clear Remedy is clinically proven to heal most types of acne and help prevent future breakouts.
